An extremely modest man was in the hospital for a series of tests, the last of which had left his bodily systems extremely upset.

Upon making several false alarm trips to the bathroom, he decided the latest episode was another and stayed put. He suddenly filled his bed with diarrhea and was embarrassed beyond his ability to remain rational.

In a complete loss of composure he jumped out of bed, gathered up the bed sheets, and threw them out the hospital window.

A drunk was walking by the hospital when the sheets landed on him. He started yelling, cursing, and swinging his arms violently trying to get the unknown things off, and ended up with the soiled sheets in a tangled pile at his feet.

As the drunk stood there, unsteady on his feet, staring down at the sheets, a hospital security guard, (barely containing his (laughter), and who had watched the whole incident, walked up and asked, "What the heck is going on here?"

The drunk, still staring down replied: "I think I just beat the crap out of a ghost."

So my phone rings, caller ID says it is a call from GA.

It is 11AM on a Wednesday, I figure the call has to be about the SCA - cause only SCA people call me in the middle of the morning.

I answer, having not programmed everyone of my seneschal's numbers into my phone, I figure it could be Astrid.

The caller asks for Felix Batton. Now, 1) I am clearly not a Felix but 2) Felix Batton is, for those you who might not know, Sir William the Stout.

I ask the caller if this is something about the SCA. A) It is after all the only way I know William and B) the middle of the morning and only SCA people call me in the middle of the morning.

He says no and repeats my number back to me to verify he dialed correctly. He says he must have written the number down wrong, says 'thank you' and hangs up.

Wrong number call ~ no big deal. But I got a wrong number call for someone I know and haven't spoken to in like 5 years. Weird, right?

This makes me wonder, does William, who I know stills lives and works in this area, have a phone number similar to mine? A quick google search does in fact show that his number is very similar to mine. Really weird, right?

So what are the odds do you think of getting a wrong number call looking for someone you, only know by another name and haven't seen in like 5 years, to than only find out that said person has a phone number very close to your own?

It is 1:38 on Friday so lets list the things I have accomplished at work this week:

lots of heavy polical lifting, coming out on the right end of it all (at least in the short term)
working late but completing lots of things
impressing senior management with the awesomeness that is me
getting major problems solved or at least given a plan or process to
finish watching a hour long demo on an app we are going to sunset but have to get the data out of

Crap to still be done:

1200 emails to be filed and some responded to
complete detailed design document for Monday 10 AM meeting
update & send the presentation for Monday 9 AM meeting
get ready for the all day kick off meetings Tues and Wed

Plan - work all day Saturday & Sunday (cause there is SCA email to deal with too)

This leads me to 2:30 on Friday and the next 3 hours empty on my calendar, which means..........................................

I am getting the heck out of Dodge at 2:31!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To bonus or not to bonus

Okay can we talk about the bonuses rationally just a minute?

I completely agree that the executives for the division of a company that lost money shouldn't be given bonuses, whether it be the company or the division.
I will also concede a bonus should not only on be based on a person's performance but on the company's performance as well.
I will also agree that it could be argued that any company that took TARP money didn't make money last year. However, please remember, so companies didn't need TARP money at the time and were told they had to take it.
I will concede that some of those companies did have to go back and ask for money but that was because some executives who worked of the other company lied or hid how much debt the acquired company had from the acquiring company.
So we have companies that HAD to have TARP money and some companies that have TARP money that may not have needed at the time, regardless the US gov't holds select stocks in all of these companies.
All of these companies consist of both executives and little people.
The Financial services industry has traditionally paid low but compensated high. In other words, you work for a really low salary and work little a dog (60 to 80 hrs average) but once a year your company gives you a big check. Sometimes these bonus can be the same amount of as a person's yearly salary, some of them can be more, but many - most- are less.

Do I think the execs at Merrill Lynch or AIG should have gotten their million dollar bonuses?
No.

Do I think the programmer who built the accounting program and delivered it early and within acceptable failure rates?
Yes.

Do I think that bonus for the programmer should be lower than years past when his company made lots more money?
Yes

Do I think that the bonus received by an employee of a company that has TARP money should be taxed at a higher rate than the 45% that a bonus is already taxed at?

NO!!!!!!

Yes, I received a bonus this year.
Yes, I have received a bonus every year for the last 5 years.
ALL of them have been less than 4 figures.
ALL of them have been taxed at 45%.

If you tax my bonus at 70%, how does that penalize my company?
Only in the mind of a democrat does this make sense.

Wouldn't you want companies who took TARP money be able to attract and retain the best associates so they can pay the TARP money back faster?
Yes

I could be making 15 to 30% more than I am now with my experience and skill set, if I left the financial industry. I don't want to leave the financial industry but I shouldn't be taxed for staying and should be rewarded for working hard.

If the Congress successfully changes the tax rate for bonuses for companies that took TARP money, the talent in the financial industry will flee in droves. Don't do it. We should not be penalized for doing good work or made to leave our choosen industry in order to be well paid.

Okay so we went to Columbia, SC this weekend and I am now the holder of all of the Kingdom Seneschal crap. Want to see the Curia notes from 1994? I got 'em.

So quick daily recap and than on the fun stuff - spreading money.

Spent Friday and Saturday with Thomas and Judith. Damn I miss them.
Went to William's and did Seneschal 101 Saturday morning.
Thomas cooked all weekend and we ate some awesome food. I need to get Judith's wilted lettuce recipe - yumm. You have got to love good traditional German food.
Came back early ET and Judith were off to Church.
Went to Target and bought furniture, moved a shelf, finished rearranging the dinning room, did some laundry and vegged out watching the last 4 parts of Band of Brothers on the History Channel (it is still surprisingly bloody on cable) while rearranging books on the bookshelf.

We got the couch, the loveseat, 2 chairs, and the ottoman. Yes, we did get the red but no ugly black with circles accent chair. It is going to be interesting. I think the living room is going to jump up in painting priority with the sage green accent wall that Bob already hates.

Basically in the last week we have completely rearranged the downstairs. The sunroom where the TV and couches were is now the dining room and is actually prettier then I expected. The dining room is now the office/library which I really like. And the living room, which was more office/library like than living room like is now an official living room. Hoot!.

Now I just need to paint - maybe I will get the downstairs done over the next 8 months or so. I could do each room in about two days a piece but the odds of me being able to take two days off in a row, let alone the 8 to 10 it would take to do the entire downstairs is highly unlikely until the summer. Oh than comes framing of artwork and new curtains. It least I have plenty of fabric in my slash to do those.

A few more and I am done:
I didn't see the last epi of BSG, consider my hands over my ears until I get to see it sometime this week.

The question is what should the Republican Party do to retake the House?

Think more centric. As Gen Xers, we are more socially liberal then the party has been traditionally. We voted for Reagan and G H W Bush not because of their stands on abortion and the other issues the Right Wing cares about, but in spite of them. I care about allowing stem cell research because it can CURE disease. Aren't health care costs outrageous enough, without avoiding the best possible paths to a cure? I care about gay marriage because no one should have the right to say I can't make a medical decision for my husband so why shouldn't it be the same for a same sex couple. The party needs to quit thinking and acting like its base is a bunch of old rich white guys. The modern Republican Party is middle class educated people who want the government to be a good steward of the economy and our security. Do that, speak that message and we will follow. I have never not voted for a Republican candidate in the 18 years I have been able to vote. I am considering it, heavily, this time. I voted for McCain in the primaries in 2000. He was a MUCH more centric candidate then. I am hoping he will be a much more centric President then he is a candidate this time around. He needs to stay away from negative ads. Tell all of the Morton Blackwell graduates to take this election off. Obama has too clean a message and is too easily seen taking the high road for negative campaigning to be effective this time. McCain can win and keep the center and undecideds if he can make a case of being a different type of Republican but with experience to guide the nation.

Much was acomplished this weekend and I feel really good going into Tuesday, (Monday has been kind of a bust) we will see if the mood surivives me waking up in the morning. Since I have had time to get stuff done, I have finally finished my questions. If you are not interested treat it like a dead subject on the Merry Rose. Otherwise feel free to enjoy the answers. (I think they will surprise some of you.

1. What is the greatest challenge of being the lady of such a diverse household?
            My greatest concern is presumption.  People presume that Robear and I have the same opinions about everything. When I speak I know that I speak for him, especially to members of our household so I try very hard to tend lightly about things that are his to determine. I know what he expects from a student, I have learned how he interacts with his students but unless we have talked about it, I don't know what he expects a student to do next or how he feels they are doing on their path. Fortunately I am able to translate when needed between he and his students. We have been blessed that those who have chosen to become Robear's students are all people whom I enjoy as people and I can be both friends with them and the Lady of their household.

2. Now that you have completed the great eye bead project, what is next on your creative horizon?
          I told Kiri, at Ymir, that I would do a Golden Dolphin medallion for her. So I am working on getting those just right. I have also decided to try doing an Order of the Sacred Stone medallion.  Since I am trying to avoid getting frustrated with those two, I am also trying to perfect cylinder and bi-cone shaped beads. Those will end up as a wind chime for me to replace the one on the porch. The other thing I am working on is a 'manly' set of beads for Robear. The Three Brothers piece is one of those I have decided I will do multiple times. I have the glass for one and need to put it together. But I understand my skill level isn't to the point that I will be completely happy with it so I will be doing it again later. I have documentation to put together for the Arielle Undine, the Eye Beads and the Three Brothers to put together before Pennsic as well. Oh and pasternosters for melspet

3. You seem to have vast reserves of patience. What advice would you give to someone who wishes to cultivate it?
          Baaaahhhh, you have no idea how funny I found this to be. Actually I am flattered you would say that to me because 10 years ago, I didn't. I had none. I have tried to develop patience so I find your question a great complement. As to how to cultivate it, marry my husband. He has helped me learn it and taught it to me as well.

4. If you had just discovered the SCA today, would you stay?
         Yes, I grew up reading Arthurian legend and being fascinated with history. I would probably become more authentic quicker if I had gotten in where I am now both geographically and economically.

5. How did you and Robear meet?
        Since I have told the 12 Night meeting story, let me tell you about our first date. I was living in Raleigh at the time and drove to Richmond for the weekend. We went for sushi in the bottom the first night. As we leaving he was having such a great time talking to me, he went the wrong way down a one way street and we got pulled over. No ticket thank goodness.

1. What do you do at your job?
          I am what is called a Business Analyst in the Technology division of a large US bank. My job to understand what the Bankers need technology wise and translate that into what the developers need to know to build the software the Bankers need to do their jobs. I am currently doing a bunch of data analysis around duplicate data detection.

2. Are you actively trying to have children, or is that just a pleasant daydream?
        Yes, actually. We will see what happens. For a very long time it has been a choice between paying the mortgage and the possibility of children. We are now to the point where we are capable of having children.

3. What is the best vigil you've ever been a part of?
       Humm, I think Bryce's Knighting Vigil is my favorite. It had great atmosphere and it felt the closest to magical. But I have a great number I hold close to my heart.  Robear's was grand but it was hard as well. Trying to plan and keep it all secret was very trying.

4. If you are ever elevated, do you want a writ, or a surprise vigil?
      If it should ever happen, I am all about the surprise.

5. What do you enjoy most about camping with Bedford at Pennsic?
      I think what I really like the best is the structure. The infrastructure rocks but the pomp and circumstance. We are a camp of former royals and it is kind of fun.

1. What is the one art that you would love to learn in the SCA?
     Humm, this is a hard one. I think I would love to be comfortable and proficient at sewing. Tents I can do, garb not so much. I would really love to learn to sew well.

2. Do you find it hard being the lady of a household and not being a peer?
      I have talked about the presumption problem. And I think that is the biggest thing.

3. If you could have any hobby outside of the SCA what would it be?
      I love working with my hands, possibly pottery. I wouldn't give up glass if I wasn't in the SCA. If I had to choose another time frame to react I think I would choose the cowboy era.   I think Bob would probably love to get into amateur food competitions.

4. What is your dream job?
      Ohh, hard one. Probably political talking head. I think I want to do what Keith Oberman does.

5. How did you and Robear meet?
       12 Night 1999, we met in Jan, he offered to buy me a car in Feb, my cat moved in with him in March and I moved in in July of that year. We got married in April of 2000.

1. When and under what circumstances did you join the SCA?
      In April of 1994 a coworker of mine found the SCA at the Azalea Festival in Wilmington. Ironically I first found the SCA when I was 10 at the Sarasota Ren Faire in FLA. I contacted the local group and thought they were really really weird because they picked 'fake' names. I often smile when I think about what my life would have been like if I had joined the SCA at 13 rather then 23.

2. What's the best part of being married to Robear?
      His devotion and that he knows me better then I know myself.

3. Would you want to be Queen of Atlantia? Why or Why not?
     I think I would love it and would love to do it. However, I would want to be sure I was financial capable and that Robear was okay with it. (He has no desire to be King, so I would have to do it with someone else.) I think it is probably the hardest job in the SCA. As Queen, I think you really are responsible for so much. For making it all 'click' for everyone.

4. Are you going to Pennsic this year?
    Yep and staying with Strawberry Fields as usual. Robear and I are going to get to go for two weeks which will be the first time we are both there for 2 weeks together. Cross your fingers we don't kill each other.

5. What is the history behind your SCA name?
       Alesia and Gillefalyn are both Irish. Alesia is basically Gaelic for Alice dating to about 1280. Gillefalyn appears in the Irish Doomsday of 1312 as a part of the McNab clan. My original choice was Lyoness Dangeaux but the heralds said no. sigh.   I regret choosing Irish over French but my persona is now about 100 years earlier then my name. Oh well.

1. What do you think of the sport of cheerleading?
     I think it is very much a sport, but wish that the negative aspects of bitchness so commonly found in it could be removed. I also wanted to be a cheerleader, it is so empowering and makes you so physically strong and tone.

    Feeding all of my creative needs, which include service and politics.

3. You can go to one 'tourist spot' of any culture that peaked before 100 ad. Where would you go?
     Egypt. Ancient Egyptian culture just fascinates me. Cross Egypt means I get to go play in Rome too, right?

4. The President offers you the position of Ambassador-elect to Egypt. Would you take it?
      In a heart beat. From a modern political perspective there is much work to be down to help the relationship between the two countries. The museums help too.

5. You can control the mind of ONE person. Whose mind would you pick?
        Ohh, wow. I have no idea.   Bill Gates maybe? Someone whom could make a long term difference in the world while I had control.

1. What Hillary have done this well if she had been a man or would she have done even better?
        Probably better. First of all she would have never had to face the negative connotations of the word 'ambition' and 'driven'. Some how these words when applied to women are code for cold heartless bitch. The other thing is most people (who aren't her supporters) believe she stayed with Bill because of the power and position their marriage provided her. Somehow I doubt that would be true if he was a man.

2) Pick one actor, personality, or politician you would donate half your income to help win the White House?
      Humm, hard one. I really like Tommy Thompson but he didn't the 'it' needed for the national stage. I guess I would say Arnie. He has do surprisingly well at making the hard decisions as Governor of CA.

3) Why is the "W" word not treated as seriously as the "N" word?
      Try because of the history of race relations in the US? Seriously, I don't mean to be a smart ass but if you dig under the layers you find that there are many who still don't like another race.  Think about Richmond downtown on a weekend after midnight. The "N" word represents suppression. The "W" word is just an insult, there is less power behind it.

4) How would you rate the current Supreme Court and what one verdict are you waiting to hear?
     I have zero problems with judicially conservative courts. My concern about this particular court is that they have moved from being judiciously conservative to just conservative. As a judge, especially a Supreme Court judge, I think you have to put your person politics aside and rule based on our constitution and the body of law. I always hold my breath when they hear anything about Roe vs Wade or stem cells.

5) Are you a Carolina Panther's fan and if not; why not? How will they do this year?
      Yep, I drank the kool-aid when we moved. We have been to a game. Had fun. My issues with the Panthers are centered around Jake. I think he lacks the ability to fix a broken play and make something happen. I am concerned about the retirement of Julius Peppers (love me some defense). I am hoping they do well and hoping they don't. I would love to see them do well because they are my home town team but if they have a crummy season we are one step closer to getting Bill Cower.

(Bonus Question) What's more important to you: yesterday, today, or tomorrow
   Like everyone else I will say today but I always try to have an eye on how best to get to a good tomorrow.

1. What is the biggest misconception folks have about you?
      I think there is a belief out there that I am some how dominated by Robear. That our decisions are based solely on what he wants and needs. This isn't true, in fact often times it is the opposite.

2) How do Bonnie and Alesia differ?
    I think Alesia has fewer faults. I believe the SCA is not only about recreating the middle ages as they should have been but recreating ourselves with the noble ideals of the middle ages and hopefully taking that improved and nobler behavior into our modern lives.  Alesia is more pure then Bonnie. Bonnie learns from her all of the time.

3) What attributes do you admire most in SCA peers you have met?
     The peers I respect speak their minds, ask the hard questions, see more then one angle and try to do what is right all of the time. I know a former Queen who chastised her King (her spouse) for treating a current King with less respect then what he himself would have expected (nay demanded) from a Knight of his kingdom. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall during that conversation.

4) Describe what it is like to be the spouse of a peer and yet on your own path.
     It is an interesting balance in being where and what you need to be to be a good pylon and being able to speak into the light on your own. I have had a great advantage in that my service path differs from Robear's art path. I think it would have been much harder to 'come into my own' if Robear was a Pelican rather then a Laurel.

5) Hopefully not too prying...but, did you ever want to have children?
     Yep and still do. We will see what Faith brings.

1. What is your favorite memory of your wedding?
     The way it all came together despite the unending rain. That and Bob smooshing my face with wedding cake because my MOTHER told him if he didn't get me I would get him. (Really could I ever be that cruel??? :P)

2. What is your favorite personality trait of Robear's?
     His ability to love me through everything we have been through.

3. What is one decision you regret making?
    From an SCA perspective it is keeping the GD principal position as long as I did. There are lots in my real life.

4. Who inspires you in the SCA?
     New people and people who do it right because they want to and don't Lord it over everyone who chooses not to.

5. What is your favorite personal indulgence?
Shopping for anything but groceries.

1. If you had 10 yards of pink linen that you had to use up, what would you make out of it?
     I think a 12th century pendant gown with black lining and embroidery.

2. If you could give up your curls and have straight or wavy hair, would you?
    Nope, I have fought with my curls all my life and grown to love them through the struggle. However when I get my hair cut my stylist, who also has curly hair, always blows it straight. It is fun to have straight hair for a few days every few months.

3. What, in general, is the toughest thing about being a seneschal?
    You have all of the responsibility and none of the real power.

4. Is Bob the same party animal at home when it is just the two of you?
    Not really, he is a bit of a homebody actually.

5. How's the baldaquin revamp coming?
    Good actually. The new awards have been finished and added to the tent part. The decorative back is out getting devices added as they get done. (I have farmed the painting out to two people who enjoy it more then I do) One thing I would do differently is instead of having them do all of one person's at a time I would have had them do them in order. It kind of looks like a puzzle with missing pieces at the moment.
